surrogates

I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine

I used to love that song as a child. The idea of letting my light shine everywhere I went seemed to be a core principle of living - a God-given right even. I miss the little girl that thought that way. She exercised freedom and took ownership of who she was and how to be. Just listen to her sing.

It was her light and she was gonna let it shine wherever she went. There were no permission slips, sidekicks, or cheerleaders needed.

However, somewhere along the way the crux of her belief system was altered and she began to give authority over her light to those around her. She became a surrogate - exhausting her light to serve someone else's vision.

And even when she tried to sing the same song, there seemed to have been some fine print added:

This little light of mine

I'm gonna let it shine

...as long as it's okay with him and it doesn't bother her because haters are gonna hate but we don't want them angry. I really don't want the critics to hang me. Or for them over there to call me selfish or blame me, for why they're not where they want to be, for why they're not standing next to me. Shining your light may cause symptoms of jealousy. Only the brave will shine bright and just let it be.
