higher, deeper

I could just sit
I could just sit and wait for all Your goodness
Hope to feel Your presence
And I could just stay
I could just stay right where I am and hope to feel You
Hope to feel something again

And I could hold on
I could hold on to who I am and never let You
Change me from the inside
And I could be safe
I could be safe here in Your arms and never leave home
Never let these walls down

But You have called me higher
You have called me deeper
And I’ll go where You will lead me Lord...
— Leslie Jordan (All Sons & Daughters), “Called Me Higher”

The thing about doing what I've always done that makes it so attractive is that it's predictable. The predictable can be nice and warm and cozy. But it can also drive me nuts. There is a part of me that senses something missing. A part of me that knows there is more to life than this.

I believe that we are all called higher. To a place of intimacy with God where we are able to see beyond ourselves. To a place where we not only face the reality that we were meant to do more than just survive in life; but where we also get a glimpse of how the beauty of our growth could inspire, encourage, and enlighten others.

I also believe that we are called deeper. I believe that we are often challenged by life's circumstances to dig deeper into who we are and all we were made to be. And every now and then, if we're lucky, we are stripped of our achievements, the expectations of our family and friends, and all of the stuff that we've accumulated. And we are able to become reacquainted with ourselves.
